Running an adult website and don't have a finance background? Here's a quick, jargon-free rundown of what Visa and Mastercard changed in 2026, and what it means for your business.
Quick definitions first:
Chargeback/Dispute = a customer questions or reverses a payment
Ratio = the percentage of your payments that get disputed
Acquirer = the bank behind your payment processor
What Changed in 2026
Visa and Mastercard Compliance changes listed below:
Rule | What It's About | What Changed | When |
Visa VAMP | Allowed disputes/fraud cases | Limit dropped from 2.20% to 1.50% | April 1, 2026 |
Mastercard MMP | How adult merchants are approved/watched | Stricter checks | January 1, 2026 |
Mastercard AN 5196 | Consent for content shown | Now covers AI-generated content too | February 27, 2026 |
TAKE IT DOWN Act | Removing non-consensual content | Must remove within 48 hours | Active in 2026 |
1. Visa Cut Your "Safe Zone" for Disputes
Visa watches what percentage of your payments get disputed or flagged as fraud. Go over the limit, and you pay extra fees, or risk losing your account.
The big change: on April 1, 2026, that limit dropped from 2.20% to 1.50%, almost a third stricter, overnight.
In real numbers: a business doing 60,000 payments a month used to be allowed 1,320 disputes before getting flagged. Now it's capped at just 900- 420 fewer, with no change in how the business runs.
There's a catch too: one bad transaction can now count twice (once as fraud, once as a dispute), pushing your score up faster.
Penalty: $10 per disputed/fraudulent transaction once flagged. First-timers get a 3-month grace period.
Adult businesses feel this more because subscriptions naturally get more disputes, customers forget they signed up, or dispute instead of canceling.

2. Mastercard Is Watching Adult Merchants Closer
Since January 1, 2026, Mastercard requires:
A monthly report on any flagged content and how you handled it
The ability for Mastercard to request temporary access to paywalled content, so "members only" isn't fully private
3. AI-Generated Content Now Follows the Same Rules
As of February 27, 2026, Mastercard's consent rules officially cover AI-generated content too. You still need proof of consent and age for anyone shown, real or AI-generated.
4. Two Takedown Clocks Now Run at Once
A U.S. law (TAKE IT DOWN Act) requires removal within 48 hours for non-consensual content; Visa has its own deadline too. Whichever is shorter wins, so track both.
Card networks combined slower, older rules into stricter, faster-moving ones. A business that was fine in late 2025 could be non-compliant today without changing anything. Check your numbers monthly, not yearly.

FAQs
What is a chargeback ratio? The percentage of your payments that get disputed or flagged as fraud. Visa and Mastercard both watch this, go too high, and you get penalized.
What's the new Visa limit for 2026? It dropped from 2.20% to 1.50% on April 1, 2026, in the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
Do AI-generated adult sites need consent too? Yes. Since February 2026, Mastercard treats AI-generated content the same as real content, consent and age proof are still required.
How do I know if my business is at risk? Ask your payment provider for your current dispute percentage. If they can't answer clearly, PayConsults will review it for free.
